Roti Chai is the place to be. Billed as ‘Modern Indian Soul Food’, the restaurant has two rooms – a Street Kitchen and a Dining Room, with separate kitchens and menus.
On both my visits, I have eaten in the Street Kitchen area. The décor of the intimate upper restaurant is simple to pay homage to India – motorbike lights adorn the walls whilst graffiti-style wording is painted over the kitchen are.
Choosing from the menu inspired from India’s Street Hawkers & Roadside Cafés, I went for the Aloo Papri Chaat made of crunchy wheat crisps, potato, chickpeas, yoghurt, hot & sweet chutney. And two mini burgers – the Bun Chilli Chicken of pulled spiced chicken; and the Bun Tikki – an Amritsar-style aloo tikki burger.
Presentation is delightful but don’t expect a large serving. What the meals lack in size is made up for in an explosion of flavours. I wasn’t very keen on the Aloo Papri Chaat as there was too much yoghurt creating a creamy texture, which my taste buds did not enjoy. But the Bun Chilli Chicken burger was AMAZING. The smacks of the spice, masala and chicken were incredible – making it one of the best burgers I have ever had. The vegetarian Bun Tikki burger didn’t quite match the same level, but the subtle tangs of the potato and spices were enjoyable.
I will be back to Roti Chai, booking ahead to try the Dining Room. This place is incredibly busy so best to book ahead or come at a quieter time!
